The layout of the new student housing restores the original “Old Main” entry into the campus and provides convenient proximity for its 348 residents to the campus Quad. The activated streetscape that frames the entry consists of deep masonry walls that heighten the contrast of shadow and light with steel-framed balconies and patios that recess from the building face and suspend within the openings. A different strategy is utilized along the secondary streets, with cement board clad bays that project beyond the brick volumes and support cantilevered balconies.
By pushing the buildings to the sidewalk edge, a series of intimate courtyards were formed. Prominent portals frame the entry into these courtyards. Ground level units are provided with two entry points, one from the interior courtyard side and the other from the street side sidewalk with a walkway connection accessing each unit’s patio.
